Student Design Work
Michigan State University, 2003-2007
This is a collection of all the print design work I did (at least all that I have digital files for still) as a student receiving my studio art (first 7 images) & advertising degrees.
The assignment was to achieve informative communication through the use of type and image in a poster.  I began this assignment by combining geometric magazine scraps to make various collages, focusing on structural relationships. After choosing the most successful collage, I decided on what kind of content would best apply to the poster. The collage I chose seemed very musical and was made of various hues of blue; it also had a gold, organic shaped image as a focal point, which reminded me of a brass instrument.  The combination of these elements seemed appropriate for the chosen
content of a documentary on the making of Miles Davis’s album, Kind of Blue.

Next img is the original collage(s) I used to decide the content.
Collage referenced in previous image/post.
The assignment was to design and create a packagethat was functional, volumetric, and persuasive without using adhesives.  The product for this package was to be ageneric children’s toy, for which I chose jacks and a ball.  I began this assignment by creating multiplevolumetric forms with only paper and tape. While researching jacks as well as different paper-made forms Idiscovered a package that seemed appropriate to pursue for the specific productI had chosen.  Not only was the packageeye-catching, but when flattened out it looked like a jack.  After experimenting with the construction ofthe “jack-inspired” package, I had developed an efficient design unique in formand content and more intentionally connected to the structure of a jack.  The package was made to attract users andpersuade them into discovering its possibilities.

The purpose of this project was to represent an animal (a cockatoo in my case) using 1 shape.
The assignment was to achieve symbolic,non-typographic communication in a visual system of three icons.  My system was built around historic hatswithin a family (a man, woman, child) and were placed on the format based on ahierarchy of age.  Each hat wasapproached the same way by beginning with tracing photographs of each type ofhat in order to determine the most representational style and perspective.  I then minimalized each hat by only using curves, lines, and simple shapes while maintaining their most important characteristicsand form. For color I useda palette of more muted colors, similar to those found in antiques or fashionsfrom the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Before completing our advertising degrees, we as students were required to take a course in which you and your assigned team compete over the entire semester to present the best campaign for a real-life company/organization. Our org. was The Arc Michigan & the challenge was to improve their image & erase the stigma that individuals with disabilities should not be treated equally to those without. For the creative aspect of the class we as a group designed ads, newsletters, brochures, and redesigned the website. At the end of the semester my group, Helix Advertising, won for the best campaign. So far as a result, one of our ads has appeared as a billboard throughout the Mid-Michigan area in multiple locations.
