These projects were inspired by Jim Dine's tool drawings. You can see Jim Dine's tool drawings at this Tate site:https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/dine-ten-winter-tools-65296,

Having students do similarly rendered tools can be a lovely beginning of the year assignment.  We started with a review of different types of observational drawing (contour line, rendering, structural line sketches, blocking in flat values, negative space drawing and so on).  The tool drawings are a combination of different types of drawing- in one work.  These are large 18" x 24".  Students are asked to work fairly swiftly and on easels. I always have tons of tools so it ends up being quite fun.  Students get their hand back in, review drawing types, and begin to develop judgement about when something is "done".
