One of my university projects was to illustrate for our favorite book. We had to keep in mind the intended audience, the vibes of the book, which style we were thinking about and keep it consistent with the characters personalities.

The book I chose, ‘I’ll give you the sun’ by Jandy Nelson, changed my life when I was a teen so it was an easy pick for me. It was the first time I felt seen and in tune with a character that seemed to be going through the same experiences I did, so it was a no brained when I decided to illustrate it.

It’s also probably the only book I have read at least 4 times, so that didn’t hurt.

 

The novel follows a set of twins, Jude and Noah. Although they were incredibly close at thirteen, three years later they are hardly speaking to each other. The early years are narrated by Noah as he struggles with an enormous secret that affects his past, present, and future. The later years are narrated by Jude as her life changes when she meets an arrogant and broken, yet beautiful boy. Jude also encounters a tormented, mysterious artist—an even more unpredictable force that changes her life, and Noah's, forever.

 

For the first part of the project we had to figure out a style for the characters and settings, and that’s what this is, hope you enjoy it!
