Hand Lettering Process

About:

A brief look at my lettering process from pencil drawing to digitally textured artwork and photography combination.
All my designs begin as pencil sketches that are then inked.
Close up of my rough sketch. As you can see, there are many mistakes and eraser marks. I have to get the details just right!
After the piece is completely inked, it is scanned, vectorized, and edited to remove elements that do not work or add elements that are needed.
I then open the vector artwork in photoshop and use various methods to add texture.
For this particular piece I used one of Ian Barnards texture products.
Close up of the texture and details.
Finally, I import one of my own photographs and use layer masks to create interaction and a sense
of space between the type and the subjects in the photograph.

This piece is part of my 365 Lettering Project on my instagram. If you enjoy my work, follow me @_louispena for more!
