Echoes of Anakotta
A sanctuary for elephants in Kerala
Step into the heart of Kerala, India, where stunning scenery and centuries-old traditions combine to create a retreat unlike any other.
The Guruvayur Temple's hallowed grounds include an elephant sanctuary called "Anakotta," which is situated inside the spaced-out grounds.

In the early 2000s, I was fascinated with photography as a means of expression. At the time, digital photography was not widely available in our neighborhood. Using my Nikon FM3 film cameras, I was able to capture some of the scenes happening on inside the "Anakotta"

I'll be presenting it to you in the form of a photo series.
When describing the temple, the name "Anakotta" refers to the elephant sanctuary or "Elephant Fort" that is associated with it. This place is sacred in Hinduism because it is used to house and care for elephants, who are adored. Elephants play an important role in the rites and festivities at the Guruvayur Temple, which is why the temple is noted for its love for elephants. To add to the temple's spiritual ambiance, elephants are often displayed during processions and ceremonies.
