Shikita | UI Design

Shikita is an educational video game about raising awareness of Type 1 Diabetes in the platform genre for Android mobile devices. Throughout the game, the player is taught about the importance of regular blood glucose monitoring and healthy eating while trying to defeat enemies invading the land from the Candy Dimension. Shikita and her friends will journey through the five stages of accepting a chronic condition of Diabetes in the three chapters of the game (currently, Chapter 1 is available): denial, anger or frustration, bargaining, depression, and ultimately acceptance.

Inventory (Before / After)

One of the main challenges we faced was enhancing the visual and communicative aspects of the Inventory. This inventory contains the food items collected, and we also included a progress bar where players could monitor their blood sugar levels and decide which items to consume to replenish energy.
To address this challenge, we opted to divide the original progress bar indicator into two separate bars: one for energy levels and another for blood sugar concentration. Given that the game aims to educate players about Type 1 Diabetes, this division allowed us to illustrate how different foods can impact energy levels and sugar levels differently. Additionally, we introduced a text box where the device provides commentary, offers advice, and injects some fun into the screen.
