SMITHSONIAN ILLUMINASIA NIGHT MARKET

BACKGROUND
On October 14-15, 2017 Soul & Ink participated in IlluminAsia: A Festival of Asian Art, Food and Culture for the Freer|Sackler Galleries’ reopening celebrations. Co-presented by Smithsonian Freer|Sackler and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the museum’s grounds were transformed for the 50,000 visitors! There was a food market busting with people, art and food demonstrations around the museum and plenty of interactive activities for people of all ages. The performances and live music energized the site, topping it off with the Smithsonian’s first ever image projection. Inside, visitors experienced the reimagined galleries and innovative exhibitions, as well as performances, conversations, and other immersive activities. Representing multiple Asian cultures, the Smithsonian brought in both local and international artists and performers.

SCOPE OF WORK
Graphic Design • Print • Art Direction • Live Screen Printing • Experiential Marketing

APPROACH
Out on The National Mall, we hosted our signature Poster Lab, giving visitors an option of four exclusive designs. Each design representing a different part of the festival. We also debuted our first ever Stencil Lab. Visitors had the option to design their own poster which we spray painted for them. We were non-stop the entire festival, making over 1000 hand printed posters in addition to the spray painted stenciling. The two posters I designed featured Asian foods to highlight the street food market, a major component of the festival. Printed on French Kraft-Tone Paper for a textural feel.
