Moiré Vintage Fashion Magazine

Moiré Vintage Fashion Magazine
Moiré (pronounced mwahr) is a fashion magazine with a focus on bringing vintage and historical fashions to modern readers. Articles range from how to adapt vintage  clothing styles into one's modern day wardrobe, to how to achieve historical hair and makeup looks, to more informational pieces on what the everyday life of a person from the past may look like. As clothes have always played an important role in human history, there is quite a lot of content to cover, and it is for this reason that Moiré generally chooses one specific time period as the focal point of a particular issue. The March 2024 issue (pictured above) focuses heavily on the Edwardian Era (1901-1910), with some more general articles added to the mix as well.

The design of the front cover draws from modern fashion magazines, featuring bold headings in red, black, and white, and a central attention-grabbing image. I altered these colors slightly to make them feel more vintage, and thus they became the color palette of my magazine: dark red, brown, and cream.
Process
Front Cover
I went through many different design concepts for this magazine. For the front cover, I knew I wanted something that blended the past with the present, and so my initial thumbnails were composed of different ways I could do this––I considered taking a black and white photo of a woman and giving her a cell phone, having her reapply her lipstick in a modern bathroom, sitting her in front of a television, and the list goes on. However, one common problem that bothered me with all of these ideas was that it took away from the main focus of Moiré: the fashion. The idea to have torn pieces of paper revealing different women in different outfits came to me rather suddenly over dinner one day, and I liked that it both featured the clothes of different time periods and the women who are wearing them.

These are a few of the images I used to create the final front cover design:
Table of Contents
I used a timeline as my table of contents. I found it fitting for a historical fashion magazine, as the table of contents takes us start-to-finish through the magazine in the same way a timeline will take us through history. I utilized a central line containing the starting page numbers for each article, and stemmed the article titles and descriptions away from it. I used a light cream background too keep with the vintage theme of the magazine.
Main Article
Titled "Cyclical Fashion and the Victorian-Edwardian Revival," the main article discusses the pattern of old fashion trends coming back into style, how often it happens, and why. The article begins with a two-page spread, title, and introductory paragraph to the article. On the following pages, I allowed the magazine to become more modern in style, and used geometric and abstract shapes in the dark red, brown, and cream color palette.

The original article from which I pulled my article is credited at the bottom.
