Roman Baths

Bath is known for its famous ruins, the Roman Baths, where the name ' Bath ' originated. This artwork is focused on the Great Bath, the centerpiece of the Roman Baths, with a surrounding terrace built when they opened at the end of the 19th century, the original vaults are long gone. The hot spring water is a turquoise color under the influence of sunlight and algae, like a piece of emerald. The exposed underground circulation heating structure shows us the wisdom of the ancient Romans. It was a bathing and social center and a place of worship for the goddess Sulis Minerva. Walking around the ruins, you can glimpse the daily lives of ordinary people in ancient Rome thousands of years ago.

Roman Baths

距离伦敦以西约100英里的巴斯小城，是英国唯一列入世界文化遗产的城市。在埃文河两岸依缓缓山坡而建的这座城市，曾是古罗马时期著名的温泉圣地。这里最著名的遗迹当属罗马浴场，甚至这个城市的名字巴斯也得名于英文浴池Bath。
这个古罗马统治时期建造的浴场建筑群直到十九世纪末才被发现和挖掘。整个建筑延伸到临近的现代街道和广场之下，包含了浴场、神庙、圣泉等多个部分。
此次插画是以罗马浴场核心遗迹——大浴场“Great Bath”为中心创作的，浴池水直接来自圣泉，常年保持在46摄氏度左右，浴池内衬有45块厚铅板，四周围绕台阶，深1.6米。浴池的四周还可见当年可供休息的长凳。
浴池屋顶最初为木结构，在公元2世纪更换为拱顶，由伸入浴池的柱子支撑。而现在拱顶早已不在，二楼的环绕露台是游客进入遗址的第一站，这个露台建于十九世纪末遗址开放时，露台两旁是维多利亚时期的罗马皇帝和英国总督的雕像，这里可以俯瞰大浴场，温泉水由于阳光照射和藻类的繁殖，呈现出碧绿色，像一块翡翠镶嵌其中。
除大浴场以外，建筑群中还挖掘出了圆形冷水浴池、暖房、更衣室、桑拿房、神庙、许愿池等配套设施，裸露的地下循环采暖结构向我们展示了古罗马人的智慧。
罗马浴场不但是洗浴、社交中心，更是崇拜智慧、战争、月亮和记忆女神苏利斯 • 密涅瓦（Sulis Minerva）的祭祀场所，古罗马人喜欢向她的温泉里投入珠宝、手镯、硬币、诅咒片（curse tablets）等物品祈福。
整个遗址博物馆的布展相当用心，走在遗迹上，配合挖掘出来的文物，复原模型和影片，可以深入了解古罗马人的宗教信仰与洗浴社交文化之间千丝万缕的联系，瞥见几千年前古罗马普通人的日常生活。
