Low-Emission Jobsites White Paper

A white paper doesn't have to be boring

Project overview: United Rentals, the world's largest equipment rental company, seeks to help their customers toward more sustainable construction practices. My team was tasked to create a white paper that outlines an approachable data-based strategy project owners and companies can apply to the predominant sources of emissions on jobsites.

Design challenge: Turn 2500-3000 words into a digestable information guide including graphical data and relevant visual examples, while continuing to modify and improve on the white paper format I previously designed

I worked with a copywriter to edit sections where length or organization was a concern for design, and to plan out how data could be presented in each chapter. Feedback from the writer, project manager, and client was meticulously applied in several revisions before arriving at the final design.

Result: Roadmap to Low-Emission and Zero-Emission Jobsites white paper is a pdf download published on UnitedRentals.com.

Start with Data

Here’s an example of the process I went through when designing graphics to visually represent data.

Request: Design a large, colorful but simple visual that communicates highest-emitting to lowest-emitting power generation sources.

Details provided:
[Head] Good, Better, Best
[Column/level 1] Tier 2 and 3 diesel generators
[Column/level 2] Final Tier 4 diesel generators
[Column/level 3] Propane and natural gas generators, hydrogen ICE generators
[Column/level 4] Hydrogen fuel cell generators, portable solar arrays

Possibly show an arrow going from Highest Emissions to Lowest Emissions

ARRIVE AT PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

Here's a selection of the final graphics from the white paper, including charts from each of the 4 chapters and showing how a stunning sidebar pull-quote gives eyes a break from lengthy information.
