In masterstudio C, the starting point were Giotto's frescoes. In all of them, the architecture appears as minimal, almost a scenography, accomodating an event. The architecture is barely a 'geste', it's function is to faciltitate a human activity, to facilitate its user. It is put to the background, while the user is much more on the foreground.
The assignment was about creating a modernized version of a Giotto fresco, where the architecture we design is in a similar way facilitating a human activity.
We'd come up with the theme of a communal garden, a 'silent and enclosed space' within the noisy constricts of an urban setting. A space for gardening, for human contact, for finding silence.
A first attempt to create an image of our project by this collage. It shows a constellation of towers within a defined, walled space. Within a mix of colourful greenery rise up high. The towers suggest to enlighten.
A first interesting contrast becomes clear. There is this interesting contrast between inside/outside. From the outside, the image would be created of an enclosed space, with towers popping above a blind wall, suggesting what could be inside.
There's the idea of a landmark first. How is this architectural project perceived from outside. Then, there is inside, the experience from within this defined space.
This image shows a first glimpse of what our project could like from the outside. The wall bares remembrance to a fortress. It's blueprint is a square, with an opening in the middle of all sides. The image shows too, a contrast in materiality between the thickness of the wall and the lightness of the towers inside.
