Hearts & Bones
a pattern collection based off the album and song, Hearts and Bones, by music artist Paul Simon
The goal of my pattern was to portray the softness and mystery yet reality of one of my all time favorite songs by my all time favorite music artist. I wanted these designs to start of more realistic then slowly lose detail as it moved from the Hero pattern to the Secondary pattern then finally to the Blender pattern. I wanted to stick with primary colors and easy to recognize designs to portray the simple complexity of the song itself.
The Hero pattern shows more detailed versions of a realistic human heart, bones, and small lightning bolts, all of which have an important role in the song itself. The Secondary pattern features only hearts and bones which are less detailed and blend into the background more. The Blender pattern is just the lightning bolts with very minimal detail, I wanted this pattern to remain as simple as possible.
For my sketches, I knew that I wanted my designs to reflect the song in a realistic way. I tried going in a cartoon-y route, but didn't feel as though it represented the weight of the song well. So I stuck with very literal and realistic illustrations.
These are the mock-ups I did for this pattern collection. I knew I wanted this design to be on a tote-bag because that is what I would buy this pattern on. Thank you!
