SAL 22-23
FLOOR LAMP | 2023

Introducing Sal 22-23: my suggestion for the international contest “Eterna bellezza”, launched by YACdesign in partnership with the Italian Embassy in Cairo and the Cairo Design Week.

The competition required projects of furniture that interpreted the concept of eternity as a trait-d’union of Italian and Egyptian culture.

Sal 22-23 was awarded of the first prize in the category “Italian designers”.
The concept behind the Sal 22-23 lamp lies in the cornerstone, symbol of eternal solidity and foundation in architecture, which aims to lay the ground for the union of Egyptian and Italian culture.

Sal 22-23 brings together the symbols of power, religion and eternity that Italy and Egypt have built in the course of history: on one side the Pharaoh, summit of the ancient social pyramid; on the other Jesus Christ, Messiah and salvation for Christians. These two strong figures full of symbolism manifest and coexist in the materials and forms of an essential design.
The inspiration for the concept comes from the scepters of the Pharaoh and the cornerstone
On the one hand, the tubular metal take the shape of the sceptres of Pharaoh: the stick (Heka) and the scourge (Nekhakha). On the other hand the tuff stone widely used by the Romans in the construction of buildings (arches, Colosseum etc.), as well as the name attributed to Jesus (Psalm 118: 22-23).

“The stone that the builders had despised has become the cornerstone.
This is the work of the Lord, it is a wonderful thing in our eyes”
