VAN BOMMEL VAN DAM | A LONG HOMECOMING
At the end of 2023 I had worked with other local young artists on a project for museum Van Bommel van Dam in Venlo, The Netherlands. This project was in collaboration with comic artist Colourbee.
Each artist was tasked with making a unique one page comic based on the artist Shinkichi Tajiri. Everyone got one subject to work from. Warriors, Knots, Machines and Towers were randomly given to each person. I got Knots.
Colourbee suggested we start with the text we wanted to put in our comic so that is where I started as well. I wanted something where readers could enterprit the story in their own way, because often Shinkichi states he wants this for his own art as well.
I mainly based my piece on all the artwork you can see on a specific walking route in Baarlo. I also created a small character meant to represent Shinkichi. The little man is made out of a Cobra knot, with this I wanted to show in a fun way the CoBra group he was a part of for a short while.
Because we did not have a lot of time I quickly came up with how I wanted to place my text and in which order I wanted to display the statues. Throughout the designing I asked feedback.
Although the differences are subtle, the people working for van Bommel van Dam wanted me to experiment with the shading color on the statues. They were afraid It would not show up on print well.
This is the final one they chose at the museum. It was a very fun project to work on. I met quite a few new people and I had a really good time seeing what everyone else made.
Our work was also exhibited and put into booklets you could purchase. The exibithion could be seen from 2 December 2023 up until 22 March 2024.
