Kvalmespillet - Digitization of a physical serious game

KVALMESPILLET
1. Semester Master Project Exam - Winter 2023-2024

Please note - The game and material were all made in Danish, to suit the common standard practises of a danish hospital practise and the wishes of SIG Emesis.

One of the first projects to come out of 2024, which was the exam case on the 1. Semester of my masters (Cand. It), is the digital adaptation of the serious game “Kvalmespillet”.
The original physical game is a serious game made by SIG EMESIS (special interest group) within DSR (The Danish Nurse Counsel), to offer more playful learning to nurses, when learning about sideeffects from medication such as nausea and sickness when treating chemotherapy.

They received positive response when making the physical game, but experienced problems regarding accessibility and lack of time to play the game with colleagues and nursing students.
THE TASK
As a group of 4 students, we went together on the case to help SIG EMESIS to reach their next step on the way, to make the digitization of the physical game a more feasible possibility, so it could be more accessible through their webpage and more enjoyable, but still a verified serious game.

The case was completed through various working methods, such as client meetings, design sprints, research about motivation theories, and more. In the end after 2 months of work, an interactive prototype was made for SIG EMESIS, which they could use to develop a fully functional game through an external developer.

THE PROTOTYPE

The prototype consisted of a game section, a daily challenge, a help section, and a settings menu, all color coded by their theme card. The settings menu would contain adjustable variables and GDPR topics, whereas the help section would contain guidance cards and the original card game as slidable info-cards.

The game section would contain several game types, for individual gameplay and multiplayer, where the content from the cards would have similar interaction effects as seen on Kahoot, Duolingo, true and false quizzes, and such.

The daily challenge section is where the users would get 3 challenges, which changes each day, and if completed, would result in a higher daily streak counter. The counter system would be used across the game types, instead of a point-based system, and be affected by how well players performs.

The GIFs below are taken from the Figma Prototype test area, to show how the buttons and
interactions respons to correct (and wrong) answers.

Aside from learning a lot about how to improve motivational participation, and how to keep the serious elements from the original game, we learned quite a bit about wicked problems too while having a blast at the exam. We got good feedback from SIG EMESIS while presenting the 1. iteration, which we brought to light at the exam too.

Legally and Copyright wise, the ownership of the materials shown all belong to SIG EMESIS. For usage of the material, Please contact me through Behance or LinkedIn.
