San Miguel de Tajao, Tenerife
San Miguel de Tajao is a small fishing village and harbour situated on Tenerife's south eastern shore. The village has several seafood restaurants, a fishery, several picturesque beaches and a volcanic rock face which has become a major tourist attraction. I visited San Miguel de Tajao and the surrounding area when exploring the island in 2018 and the following collection of photographs were shot exclusively on 35mm black and white film.
Volcanic Qualities
Like everything on Tenerife, the rock face and cliffs in San Miguel de Tajao have a spectacular volcanic quality owing to the islands geological history. The rocks are main pumice, and feel light and brittle underfoot. The deserted beach, just north of San Miguel de Tajao impressive rock face, is made up of large stones polished smooth by the ocean; but their size and scale are impressive, and gives the impression that they were made for giants. Visually the beach and rock face are stunning, and has an interesting mixture of shapes, forms, lines and textures which are perfect for capturing on black and white film.
