I find a lot of inspiration throughout nature within the texture, color, and movement that surround us.  The Grand Canyon in my opinion is one of the earth’s most beautiful forms.  The burnt oranges, deep reds, and rich browns have always been appealing to my eyes.  Not only the visual beauty of the space, but the immensity has always intrigued me.  There is something about the feeling one gets when submerged into a space that is significantly larger than one self.  I find this feeling to be peaceful, a quiet space for me to reconnect with nature and my inner spirit.

Using a honeycomb pattern and the warm color palette illustrates the layers of rock and the horizon line of the canyon.  When researching ponchos many of what I liked were reminiscent of 60’s and 70’s style vintage apparel.  I wanted to somehow give my piece a vintage feel so I decided to bleach parts of my fabric.  The bleach made the colors more vibrant which reflects onto the idea of the sun rising/setting over the canyon.

When it comes to a contemporary artist, Free People Clothing demonstrates what I aim to do as a designer.  Free People Clothing has a bohemian, vintage image with a focus on embroidery, woven textiles and high quality craftsmanship.  I would love to be able to be a part of their team one day.  I thought of this assignment as if Free People was asking me to design a piece of clothing for their new line.  I tried to gear toward their aesthetic while still making it my own.
