The crowd went all quiet when Mayor Griffin cleared his throat. He reminded me of Humpty Dumpty—egg-shaped with arms and legs so skinny, he looked like he might topple over at any minute.
My face stung. My neck ached. The snow Parry had shoved down my coat and shirt melted and left me cold and wet.
But worst of all, I couldn’t find my glasses.
That’s when I saw the rest of the town, heading for the opposite end of the bridge with Julian at their head. Like me, he waved his arms and shouted but no one listened.
