A periphery refers to "a marginal or secondary position or aspect of a group, subject, or sphere of activity”. (Oxford Languages, 2023) It connotes that there is a dominant and central subject of focus, and everything else that lies outside of that is categorised as ‘other. The field of art and design is no stranger to such hierarchies. Our industry is dominated by euro-centric ideas of design from the the Bauhaus, Swiss, German and American styles. While there has been a lot of theoretical research on the importance of decolonising design practice, little has been done to actually identify and understand peripheral practices that occur today. Even as a Southeast Asian myself who is currently practicing in the local design scene, I was humbled to find that I know very little about regional design aesthetics and ways of thinking.

'Peripheral Vision' is an effort to start discussing and identifying some alternative, non-western design practices I have discovered, and outlines my own journey of trying to decolonise my own graphic design mind. The design reader literally steers attention to the peripheries of the page, and hopefully encourages us as designers to adopt more plural, empathetic and cross-cultural perspectives.
