CAVO GRECO REVITILIZATION
Demetriou Stavros, Gatt Aaron, Hadjigeorgiou Pantelis, Pitsilli Maria, Tymviou Ifigeneia - Winter Semester 2021/22 - Maria Auxiliadora Galvez

An intense semester with a nature based design that gives priority to all the living organisms that are struggling in the area of Cape Greco (Ayia Napa). Corals, animals and plants used to thrive in this area and that is why it is protected by the Natura 2000 organisation. Throughout the years ignorance and the human factor destroyed millions of years of coral. Our task, to address both sea life and land life and minimise the human factor. Our design includes 3 parts, the floating wooden rafts, the natural land rocks and the seabed mud objects.

A detailed analysis of our site including the different types of flora native to Cavo Greco. The different types of terrain located at the site from rocky to agriculture. Visible are also the contour lines indicating the extreme slopes and different heights available.
Multiple sections analyzing the coral life and different types of corals both extinct and present at the site. Multiple diagrams of the life cycles of fossils, corals and vermetids. At the right side the factors that harm and damage the area. Activities that should be limited and reduced but no measures are being taken.
The first aspect of the project includes the natural rocks created from biomimicry with the use of 3D scanning of native rocks and fossils to create a dirt naturally dissolving rock. Those rocks promote the growth of multiple species of nature while their size limits the access of cars to the area. Specifically placed educational planters will have holes that will look towards specific locations and include information of the area. The educational planters are  meant to dissolve and be replaced at different locations.
Floating nurseries that will promote new growth and the limit of incoming boats disturbing the local coral population. The nurseries will include mud plates that new corals will be placed on them. With the passage of time and the growing of the corals the plates will collapse and the corals will spread across the seabed having the chance to repopulate areas that have been previously destroyed.
n Coral tiles that have a main purpose to strengthen locations with existing corals that are struggling to survive. The porous structure and the shape of it are excluded from the corals using biomimicry to promote the best conditions for the corals.
A final complete section including all the structures from land to sea and the strategies used to revitalize the whole region and prioritize the growth of flora and fauna. Educational planters, floating nurseries, and coral tiles all at work giving new life to a struggling natura 2000 protected area.
