Mexico Agrees with U.S. in Illegal Border Crossings

Mexico entered into an agreement with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to deter the surging number of migrants illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. In the agreement, migrants who illegally cross the border will be deported to their home countries. Mexico also agreed to remove the pressure in its northern cities, particularly those that border Eagle Pass, Texas, El Paso, and San Diego. Instead, Mexico will implement more actions to prevent illegal migrants from using railways to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to official reports, over 8,000 immigrants were recently arrested in a single day crossing the US-Mexico border. This is up from the nearly 3,500 that were arrested daily for illegally crossing before Title 42 expired in May, triggering new consequences.

As part of the agreement, Mexico will implement a series of 15 actions. Mexico will also negotiate with its neighbors - Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela - to have them confirm receipt of illegal migrants who have been arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border. The actions include daily reporting of the number of migrants using the rail system to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the El Paso sector and conducting checkpoints and interventions along railways and highways.
