Santa Marta, ubicada en la costa del mar Caribe en el departamento de Magdalena, Colombia, es reconocida por su extraordinaria biodiversidad, tanto en fauna como en flora endémica. Sus encantos naturales incluyen pintorescos balnearios y, destaca en particular, la imponente cordillera de la Sierra Nevada, la cual constituye el litoral tropical más elevado del mundo, alcanzando una altitud máxima de 5730 metros.
Este lugar se ha denominado "la ciudad con mayor biodiversidad del mundo" debido a su variedad de climas y pisos térmicos, su abundancia hídrica y su riqueza biológica. Desde tiempos ancestrales, la Sierra Nevada ha sido considerada por la cultura Kogui el centro del mundo, y en la actualidad, Santa Marta se destaca como una de las ciudades turísticas más prominentes a nivel global.
Santa Marta, located on the Caribbean coast in the Magdalena department of Colombia, is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity in both fauna and endemic flora. Its natural attractions include picturesque spas, with a particular highlight being the imposing Sierra Nevada mountain range, constituting the world's highest tropical coastline, reaching a maximum altitude of 5730 meters.
This locale has been dubbed "the city with the greatest biodiversity in the world" due to its variety of climates and thermal zones, its water abundance, and its biological richness. Since ancient times, the Sierra Nevada has been regarded by the Kogui culture as the center of the world, and today, Santa Marta stands out as one of the most prominent tourist cities globally.

Este proyecto surge como un encargo experimental con la meta de integrar las actividades y residentes del Centro Histórico de Santa Marta con una significativa comunidad indígena: Los Koguis. Busca proporcionarles mayores oportunidades de apropiación y acceso a diversos servicios de manera inclusiva y no invasiva, al mismo tiempo que impulsa otras actividades enriquecedoras de la región, como el turismo y el arte.
Con este propósito, se plantea la creación de un edificio híbrido que fusiona los siguientes usos: hospedaje, servicios y cultura. El proyecto comprende un hotel con museo destinado a turistas, con la finalidad de financiar la estadía de los Koguis mediante los fondos recaudados. En los niveles inferiores, se incorporan usos comerciales como restaurantes y servicios especializados, como una notaría diseñada para atender de manera particular a esta población.
This project arises as an experimental commission with the goal of integrating the activities and residents of the Historic Center of Santa Marta with a significant indigenous community: the Koguis. It aims to provide them with greater opportunities for appropriation and access to various services in an inclusive and non-invasive manner, while also promoting other enriching activities in the region, such as tourism and art.
With this purpose in mind, the creation of a hybrid building is proposed, merging the following uses: accommodation, services, and culture. The project includes a hotel with a museum for tourists, with the aim of financing the stay of the Koguis through the funds collected. On the lower levels, commercial uses such as restaurants and specialized services, such as a notary designed to cater specifically to this population, are incorporated.

El objetivo principal de este edificio es propiciar encuentros no segregados entre turistas y diversas culturas, permitiéndoles compartir y socializar en actividades cotidianas. Para lograr esto, el edificio cuenta con un programa integral y ofrece características de valor añadido, tales como ágoras, cocinas compartidas, huertas colectivas y terrazas habitables con dormitorios para viajeros (hamacas y duchas al aire libre en la terraza), todo ello bajo la sombra de los árboles.
The main objective of this building is to foster non-segregated encounters between tourists and diverse cultures, allowing them to share and socialize in everyday activities. To achieve this, the building features a comprehensive program and offers added-value features such as agoras, shared kitchens, collective gardens, and habitable terraces with accommodations for travelers (hammocks and outdoor showers on the terrace), all beneath the shade of the trees.
Para la cultura indígena Kogui el árbol representa conexión territorial y con la naturaleza. Estos cumplen una función mediadora para restablecer el orden en el mundo. Los arboles son los cabellos del mundo y la fuente de sustento del hombre, por lo que esta comunidad tiene una gran religiosidad de respeto y cuidado de la madre tierra, es decir del territorio y sus arboles. Según estos, los árboles son seres vivos y semejantes, cosechados por por el dios Yaao con el mismo maíz del que surgió el hombre, y por ende son gente, son nuestros hermanos.
For the Kogui indigenous culture, the tree represents a territorial and natural connection. Trees serve as mediators to restore order in the world. They are considered the "hair" of the world and the source of sustenance for humanity. Consequently, this community holds deep religious reverence for the respectful care of Mother Earth, encompassing the territory and its trees. According to their beliefs, trees are living beings, akin to humans, harvested by the god Yaao with the same corn from which humans originated. Therefore, trees are regarded as people, our brothers.

El proyecto CENTRO DE INTERCAMBIO CULTURAL KOGUI retoma este símbolo (el árbol) como representante de esta cultura (los Koguis) y del territorio (Santa Marta) como mediador entre la naturaleza y los usuarios. Este representa la reunión para compartir actividades cotidianas y experiencias bajo la sombra y la luz filtrada.
The project "KOGUI CULTURAL EXCHANGE CENTER" embraces the symbol of the tree as a representative of the Kogui culture and the territory of Santa Marta, acting as a mediator between nature and the users. It symbolizes the gathering for sharing everyday activities and experiences under the shade and filtered light.
