Untamed Cat Food Product Photography

Commissioned Projects. There’s a whole world of modern, premium, direct-to-consumer start-ups operating online these days, and they make for some pretty interesting clients for product photographers. Since working with Noun For Pets in the summer of ‘23, I’ve been on the lookout for more pet-related brands to work with to increase the range of product types I can show to have worked with effectively. Enter: Untamed. A premium cat food brand delivering tailored nutrition for cats across the UK.

My initial chats with the lovely people at Untamed told me that they had struggled to find consistent, cost-effective and high-quality brand photography. In identifying this, I made setting the goals I needed to hit for this new client very easy; these are all my selling points for Studio G! This ‘actively involved’ approach to new projects and clients (whilst admittedly obvious) continues to hold Studio G in good stead – taking the time to draw a complete brief out of my clients and gathering a list of objectives for my content to hit, alongside looking great. These small pointers help develop my processes and keep each project looking fresh and unique, and the versatile content produced performs better and longer for my clients. Win-win!

Amidst discussions of larger projects with feline models and countless new product launches on the horizon, we tested the water with an initial project focusing on their soon to be re-launched cat treat products. Utilising my popular Start-up Package template, I shot two variations of these well-designed pouches in consistent styles with vibrant and on-brand colours. Following this, an incredibly positive response to our first project immediately led to the confirmation of a second project with a new product focus, and I’ll be updating this page with new content as time goes on!

A problem to solve for our potential future collaborations: Working with cats as models. I’ve worked with dogs before, who for the best part are conveniently reward-driven, but I’m told this is not the case with cats. What I’ve decided will be my first attempt at tackling this challenge is to take a wildlife photography approach. Set a trap (in this case, the trap is a ‘set’), put some distance between myself and it and patiently wait for the focus to enter the scene and utilise a longer focal length lens. Either that, or lean on Photoshop’s AI-powered ‘Generative Fill’ function.
