A lighting installation created by Alena Woo, Krissi Smith, Scott Fortune and
Haylee Drummond.

Initially our aim was to create a highly playful, interactive installation. This was conceptualised by using UV reactive liquid in plastic spherical ‘containers’ which would support the notion of play, by allowing the audience to energetically interact with them. However, over the course of the project, this developed into a more atmospheric and immersive user experience. Through changing the form of the ‘container’ from plastic to glass, we transformed the installation into a captivating, low-tech work that users could still interact with albeit in a more gentle fashion. Secondary to this aim, was to activate, and draw people to, natural environments within the cityscape.

In order to augment the atmospheric, hypnotic charm of Potion Forest, users are encouraged to swirl, swing and gently bounce the jars hanging the trees. Our installation also draws on notions of childlike wonder by encouraging the audience to situate themselves not only within the piece, but to turn their gaze upwards.
Our most successful element is the intangible nature of Potion Forest. Through focusing on a more emotive sensibility our installation transports users from their busy, urban surroundings, to one of ambient serenity and wonderment. Furthermore, the way in which the glass jars and the light emitting from within interact create a truly beautiful spectacle.
