FACS 442 LIGHTING
This course was designed to equip students to effectively design the interior lighting layout of spaces. The process for the first assignment consisted of a mock residential lighting renovation where each student was provided with the same floor plan from different spaces within a proposed house. Each of us were to then evaluate and design the given space with a specific style in mind, while also adhering to codes and maintaining visually appealing attributes. The project incorporated the use of light as a design element, which is demonstrated through drawings and specifications. Each type of lighting was studied and manipulated in detail throughout the course, depending on the need of the project. Reflected ceiling plans as well as specification books were created frequently during this class.
RESIDENTIAL LIGHTING RENOVATION
The style I chose to incorporate in and throughout the mock building was centered around a mix of Scandinavian and Javanese design. The materials contained a variety of natural elements as well as gold accents. The sheet set consists of reflected ceiling plans of a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen, as well as elevations within those spaces. All of the sheets were created using AutoCAD and Illustrator.

COMMERCIAL LIGHTING DESIGN
For this project the class was directed to design the lighting for a mock restaurant located in Smith Mountain Lake VA. The restaurant, called Skippers, is located in a mini mall that is part of a large marina and mixed-use facility. Their menu includes sea food, but also artisan burgers and pizzas, and caters to an upscale market. The space has 15’ ceiling to the unfinished deck, and while the interior furnishings they plan to purchase are minimal (white tablecloths and wood chairs, simple bar stools, etc.) that border on contemporary, they want the ceiling to be interesting and the lighting to make a statement.
SKIPPER'S RESTAURANT UPFIT
The vision for Skippers restaurant began with the desire for a muted contemporary style, with the incorporation of a unique statement throughout the ceiling design. Maintaining unity was of utmost importance as the facility is located in a populated region and will gain momentum based on the approval and admiration from the guests who choose to dine here. Tints of blues, tans, greens, and other natural colors were used when specifying light fixtures to achieve a more coastal color palette in relation to the cuisine served. As a result of the particular upscale market within the area, hints of luxury style design are incorporated throughout the restaurant. Polished silver as well as color-stained glass can be seen upon entering the space.
The main attraction is the center tray ceiling design which is shaped with an organic line style to continue with the representation of movement that can be associated with the waves of the ocean. It is lined with LED strips to highlight the stainless-steel water ripple sheet that lines the interior of the tray. Tracing the line of sight to the center back wall, an interior waterfall flows behind the bar. The design principle: movement, can be seen in all directions of the restaurant as it reflects the coastal style approach. Skippers restaurant is filled with an interior that welcomes relaxation and maintains a more intimate space. The classy style is what sets the restaurant apart from other local attractions in the Smith Mountain Lake area. With the combination of ornate light fixtures, to the unique choice of adjustments made within the structure of the ceiling, Skippers makes a distinctive statement that is bound to draw visitors to the restaurant.
