Cuba's Recent Diplomatic Developments

Cuba has been a focal point of global interest. This is characterized by recent diplomatic changes significantly influencing its relationship with the United States, particularly during the early 2010s.

For instance, in December 2014, the then-president of the USA, Barack Obama, tried to cease the conflict that spanned for years since the cold war. This step eventually led to the opening of embassies in Havana and Washington, as well as easier access to American travelers to Cuba, and finally, it helped boost Cuba's economy.

However, the American embargo against Cuba (known as the blockade in Cuba) remained largely in place despite improved relations. The embargo further retarded the expansion of the Cuban economy. Furthermore, the Trump administration imposed tougher sanctions concerning travel and trade with Cuba, reversing some of the strides made during the Obama administration.

The diplomatic landscape changed once again with the inauguration of President Joe Biden. Though the administration of President Biden never implemented a full-scale return to Obama-era practices, it still wants to improve relations with Cuba.

The country's diplomatic efforts extend beyond its relationship with the US, strengthening ties with other countries in Latin America and Europe. For example, Cuba's medical diplomacy, involving sending doctors and medical professionals to other countries, has garnered international attention.
