Design & the American Vote: plan, implement, exhibit

Exhibition & event celebrates Design & The American Vote

“Get Out the Vote,” a campaign of AIGA's Design for Democracy initiative, invites AIGA members, during national election years, to create nonpartisan posters that inspire and encourage participation in the electoral process. Members submit their artwork to a national panel that chooses 25 posters to print and distribute to chapters and student groups across the country, where they can shared with the community by exhibition, public postings, or whatever means necessary. Every submitted posters is also available in the online gallery, for viewers to browse, share with friends, or print out and post in their community to help Get Out the Vote!

AIGA Richmond chose to combine this exhibition with a national study in ballot redesign (another initiative of Design for Democracy) and a local study of website design of current political candidates. Results of the studies, along with the 25 posters were arranged in an exhibition at a local art gallery.

To promote the exhibition, and stimulate conversation about design in the political and electoral process, AIGA Richmond invited Khoi Vinh, at the time Design Director for the New York Times, to speak on design, his firm Subtraction, and the redesign of the New York Times website.

My role included design and hanging of the exhibition, as well as design of the space for the speaker event. For the local study, participant quotes were hand-drawn onto the walls, accompanying large-format printouts of said websites.

Diagram was shared with AIGA Richmond planning committee to convey physical space available for the exhibition, and for the eventual speaker event.
Our exhibition space was local gallery art6.
Quotes from the website review study were hand-drawn next to each printout of site in question. The sites of all political parties were included in the study and exhibition.
Images were shared from around the country, where voters were asked to snap a photo outside their polling place.
Designer Khoi Vinh, former Design Director of the New York Times, talks about his own website.
