Nature-based Solutions and the Greening DRR Project

By working with nature versus against it, we can protect people from disasters like flooding and extreme heat. Nature-based solutions might include the protection and restoration of forests, the protection of mangroves and coral reefs, the conservation and restoration of wetlands, or the creation of urban green spaces.

In partnership with American Red Cross and USAID Philippines, Greening Red Cross and Red Crescent Disaster Risk Reduction is one of the disaster risk reduction programs of the Philippine Red Cross that incorporates nature-based solutions into DRR.

In the Philippines, it is being implemented in the Bohol province by the Philippine Red Cross – Bohol Chapter. There are three communities for this project namely: (a) Brgy. Bonkokan Ubos, Lila for the coastal area/storm surge context; (b) Brgy. Manaba, Garcia Hernandez for the river/flooding and soil erosion context; and (c) Brgy. Valladolid, Loboc for the river/flooding context. In the implementation of the project in the country, a series
of capacity-building activities, assessments, design and planning activities, learning visits, exchanges, and workshops are being conducted.
