Project Dank Egg - The Incredible Machine

This was a collaborative project, called The Incredible Machine, for my MD200-03 course. We were tasked with creating an animation of an egg travelling from the left of the screen to the right side of the screen. Anything could happen between this movement as long as the egg ended up in the correct place on the right. This was because the project needed to fit into a compilation of similar projects made by the class that all flowed together in one long movement.
I teamed up with my classmate John Tanner for this project. We wanted to go for a gritty, grimy very textured animation with the intention of making the viewer uncomfortable. We decided to design all of our assets using watercolour paints which we then scanned in, cleaned up in Photoshop and then brought into After Effects.

Our biggest stylistic influence was the old Cartoon Network show called
The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. This show was made using watercolour as well with lots of detailed unsettling close up images which inspired our close up shots of the egg's face.
The main focus of this project was learning how to work in a team and develop a sort of pipeline workflow. In the past I have never really enjoyed team work because the workload always ends up being unbalanced, however this project was different. John and I set up a well organised schedule where we split up the workload to each other's advantages and we ended up working really smoothly. I had to learn to let go and trust that my team has my back but once I got there it was a really rewarding experience. I learnt a lot of valuable team work skills throughout this project which I feel I am going to benefit from later on in the industry.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and I specifically enjoyed mixing traditional and digital mediums to make this piece. I find myself not going back to paint and paper enough which I really love doing and this project provided me with a great opportunity to get back into the watercolour medium.

Overall I am happy with the final result, the only thing that is lacking is more water details while the egg is flushed through the pipes but otherwise it was a valuable and fun learning experience.
