Akatsuki (暁, literally meaning "Dawn" or "Daybreak") is a fictional organization of shinobi in the anime and manga series Naruto. It was initially founded by Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan in Amegakure during the Third Shinobi World War, with the goal of bringing peace to their war-torn homeland. However, after Yahiko's death, Nagato was manipulated by Madara Uchiha into becoming the leader of Akatsuki, and the organization's goals shifted to the domination of the world.
The Akatsuki is made up of some of the most powerful shinobi in the world, all of whom are classified as S-rank criminals. The organization's signature trait is its members' black cloaks with red clouds, which they wear to signify their status as criminals and to conceal their identities.
The Akatsuki's primary goal is to capture all nine tailed beasts, known as jinchūriki, and extract the beasts from their hosts. The Akatsuki plans to use the tailed beasts' power to create a new Ten-Tails, which they will then use to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that will trap the entire world in an illusion of peace.
