Zepter wristwatch - Diploma project

So, after posting some of my student projects, we came to my diploma project, done in September 2011. A few of us were given the opportunity to design a product with Zepter branding for our diploma projects. After some thinking, I thought it would be interesting to design a men's wristwatch as Zepter does have them in their product portfolio.

I always loved watches but didn't really know much about them, so it was a bit of an uphill struggle that meant I had to learn quite a lot about the types, market, design, features etc.

Since I knew Philip Zepter is also a car collector while Zepter is a sponsor of the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix and cars are my greatest passion, I chose to design a watch inspired by pre-war Grand Prix cars.

I took inspiration from different cars of the era like the Mercedes W125, Auto Union Type C and D, Bugatti Type 35, Alfa Romeo 8C etc. The watch case itself is relatively big as it should resemble the speed dials of those cars. Its design is specific in the sense that hours and minutes are displayed in separate apertures and there is only the second hand (not counting the date aperture and hand). It's a very unique design with only a few watches having a similar solution. The watch has a tachymeter function.

There are many details inspired by some parts on the pre-war Grand Prix cars - the crown is inspired by the Bugatti Type 37 radiator cap, the rear end of the watch is inspired by the car wheels, while the rotor of the automatic mechanism looks like a crankshaft.

There are several color options for the dials and they also have ties to the motor racing - before the '60s, racing cars were painted according to where the racing team running them was located. The countries I chose are Germany (white), Italy (red), France (Blue de France), the USA (Cunningham Racing Stripes) and Great Britain (British Racing Green). There is also a black dial as a neutral color. The case could be white or regular gold, while the belt can be brown or black leather.

In the end it took me exactly two weeks of maximum effort from start to finish to complete the project.
