Arts + AI Education

Arts Education
As a STEM educator, and leader of the MIT MA State Science & Engineering Fair for decades, I focused on helping students learn and succeed in fields of advanced science and engineering fields, most notably AI.  Over time, I found ways to integrate my passion for art/creativity with AI, to create a series of courses that encourage students to learn about the math and concepts behind AI, while using those skills to create visual arts and creative narrative, that energize the students about the future of technology and its place within the world of arts.  Below see a class on AI plus physical art, based on a curriculum I created a number of years ago, along with some of the neural style transfer influences and outputs.  The course and class below was held at the Mass College of Art in Boston.  I taught a related class at Mt. Holyoke College, as well as a number of education institutions throughout New England and East Asia.  As part of this class, we also had students from Beijing and Shanghai come to visit both CMU (for those of you from CMU you may recognize the statue below as that of Mao Yisheng - the first Ph.D. at CMU) and Harvard, and I had the opportunity to teach these students as well as conduct some research on the class efficacy.  This work can be found published at the NSTA peer reviewed journal here - https://www.nsta.org/science-teacher/science-teacher-mayjune-2022/teaching-artificial-intelligence-through-arts-beijing   Regardless of where the students were from, all around the world, they really enjoyed the opportunity to learn both art and AI in one, fun, creative lesson plan.  If you'd like more info on this course and how you can obtain the teaching materials for your class, please reach out to me.  Thanks!
