MOTION CARTOGRAPHY OF CHILEAN ANDES (2023)
This project aims to showcase the relief of the largest continental mountain range in the world, the Andes mountain range. Human intervention and mineral exploitation zones are exposed in the development of the work.
Exploration paths and their zig-zag lines, vehicular connection routes, operational mining sites, and small settlements are shown on smaller scales.
By using satellite images, a topographic survey of the Central Andes is conducted between latitudes 17°44’10”S and 32°80’10”S, covering areas in Chile, Argentina, Peru, and Bolivia.
These images display the colors of mineral resources scattered across the volcanic territory, outlining the reliefs of the slopes and valleys of a mountain range that continues to grow and expose its resources to the surface. Presenting these images as a visual resource in a vertical visualization reveals an almost random composition of layers, brushstrokes, and lines where, at first glance, the viewer appreciates the pictorial aspect. As the movement reveals more portions of the territory and the cartography scales down, more information is conveyed to the viewer. Understanding of the work begins at this point. The provided information is separated, including peaks, slopes, valleys, rivers, and roads.
