Fourknocks Megalithic Passage Tomb

Fourknocks was built approximately 5000 years ago. The meaning of Fourknocks is only speculation. The Gaelic meanings include Fuair Cnocks — translated cold hill, or Four Cnocks meaning four tombs.

This passage tomb consists of a short entry passage, opening up to a large chamber with three smaller chambers. When excavated in the early 1950s, close examination of the ashes and bone fragments revealed that there were 65 people buried there. Along with the burial remains, they found pottery, and personal adornments such as beads and pendants.

Fourknocks is difficult to find since it is not visible from the road. With help from the area farmers, you will be directed to a small break in a hedge where you’ll find a path that leads to the tomb. To be able to enter the tomb, there is a sign directing you to the home of Mr. Finney White (down a small lane, the third house on the right) where you can pick up the key to the gate; leaving a 20 Euro deposit which guarantees you’ll return the key to Mr. White.
