SOCIETAL DEHUMANIZATION OF THE NEURODIVERGENT ZINE

Zine: Societal Dehumanization of  the Neurodivergent
Overview:
This was a cohort-wide exhibition in which we passed out zines about a current and polarizing social topic. Alongside our zines, we had posters that would be visible once the entire booklet was opened. These posters were scaled up and put on display for the December 2022 Corpus-Christi Art Walk. My chosen topic was the dehumanization of neurodivergent people from a societal level.

Process:
This topic was chosen because self-advocacy for mental illnesses is misunderstood and complex. Often when we hear about neurodivergence, it is from the perspective of a caregiver or loved one. The voice of the neurodivergent person is often overlooked. This is evident by the lack of zines that deal with the topic of neurodivergence. I decided to make the zine resemble medical books with the photos being surreal collages of anatomical diagrams. On the back of each page, there are abstract drawings alongside affirmations for those who are neurodivergent.
My first Drafts and a close-up of one of my collages.
My second iteration of the zine flat and in book form.
Final Solution:
My final execution in flat and in booklet form.
