The Blue World Institute / Plavi svijet Institut annual report design
The Blue World Institute of Marine Research and Conservation (BWI) works to protect the marine environment in the Adriatic Sea.The basic motifs for the visual design of the annual report are the sea, the horizon and dolphins. The 24 cm x 25 cm format is divided into horizontal thirds where the images are located in the central one. The sequence and fluidity of the images is associated with the horizon itself, the sea surface and its continuity. Occasional extensions of the images up and down are associated with the course of movement of dolphins, surfacing and diving. Graphs and tables are inspired by the characteristics of dolphins. Echolocation is biological sonar, they imitate sound waves in the environment and receive the echo that bounces off different objects. Animals use it to identify objects, determine distance, communicate. Also, each species of dolphin has a specific voting frequency, within which there are individual differences between
individuals. Species voting records were used for the graphsdolphins living in the Adriatic and the principle of sound recording in echolocation. The shape of the maps was designed based on the nautical charts that the Institute uses for research. The colors within the report are reduced to the characteristic colors of the sea and dolphins.
This project was created as part of the Visual Communications course
at School of Design, Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb.
