Abstract

Majority of inscriptions are found in Anuradhapura,  Polonnaruwa,  Ampara, Kurunegala, Puttalam,  Vavuniya,   Trincomalee,  Batticaloa,  Hambantota,   Kandy,  Kegalle,  Matale, Badulla,  Monaragala,  Nuwara  Eliya,  Gampaha  and  Ratnapura  districts.  Inscriptions
can be categorized according to the surfaces they were engraved on, the language they were written in, their age, and the regions in which they are found.

Some  inscriptions  are  only  meaningful   as  pictorial   symbols  (graphics),  not  textual signifiers. To  identify  pictorial  symbols  in  inscriptions,  archeological  experts  must  be consulted. The early inscriptions lack poetic embellishment and simply record events with no didactic or educational value (Bandara and Varnajit,2012). Pictorial symbols other than text can be seen at the beginning or end of a line of writing in a few  inscriptions. There  is now a smartphone app available to recognize characters, but  no  mobile  application  has yet been developed to recognize pictorial symbols and identify the era of characters. As  a result, we are trying to identify the pictorial symbols and identify their era  and  develop  an application to identify the era of the characters of the inscriptions.

Research Problem

Limited information about inscriptions can be found on the internet. But   pictorial  symbols and the meaning of them are not available on the internet. Therefore it will be very useful if a web based system or mobile application is publicly available to detect and get meanings of pictorial symbols of  inscriptions  in  the  Sri  Lankan  context.  In  fact,  having  a  digital repository, information about inscriptions can be presented in a more attractive  and  more understandable way. Accordingly, the symbols of the inscriptions are seen from around the 4th century. Therefore, pictorial symbols from the 4th century to the 15th century  and  the period between them were necessary for the study.

Research Objectives

Main objective

To develop a mobile application for determining the era  of  an  ancient  inscription  with  a pictorial symbol and identifying the era of an inscription  with  only  a  pictorial  symbol  as
well as identifying the pictorial symbol

Specific Objectives

To study the weakness and strengths of the existing techniques on inscription reading through an extensive literature review

To build and expansion of the image dataset of  various types of inscriptions

Apply machine learning  algorithms to determine era by identifying pictorial symbols and characters in inscriptions

To find an advanced and accurate machine learning technique for recognition of era of Sinhala inscriptions and identify pictorial symbol

To develop a mobile based application detect the era based on characters and symbols of inscriptions
