Guinness Mini Keg

This was a final year college project done in conjunction with Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks manufacturer. The brief was to develop a one trip keg in the range of 5 to 50 litres which will ideally be a lower cost, lower carbon alternative to the stainless steel returnable keg. The brief was very open, allowing us to explore various avenues into the drinks industry.

Our aim here was to design a product that would capture the emerging trend of home consumption by creating a solution with a lower cost and carbon impact whilst offering the consumer a unique and fulfilling pint pouring experience in the comfort of their own home. The unique selling point opportunities, user friendly design and recyclable gas exchange system, makes our 5 litre mini keg the first of its kind. The final design was influenced and inspired by the compelling story of invention, passion and belief associated with the iconic Guinness brand.

Below is our final solution which we presented to a panel from Diageo.

The open curved design was inspired by St James Gate. The design of the tap is reminiscint of a key to St James Gate with the Guinness harp embossed into it. Arthur Guinness' signature is engraved onto the top of the keg.
An app was also designed and create for the mini keg. The idea behind this was to enhance the excitement and theatre that goes beyond consumption. By using the phones camera, the app recognises the Qr code located on the gas canister. The app then projects an image around the mini keg itself. So for example, if Guinness were sponsoring a festival and by taking a photo with the keg, a brand image would appear around the mini keg. Users can then pose in these pictures and share with their friends. Below is an example.
