CCA Works to Spay and Neuter Feral Cat Colony

A Harrisonburg, Virginia resident, Cate Lemmond has been president of a nonprofit veterinary center since 2005. Cate Lemmond oversees several community programs, including free and subsidized veterinary care, pet food for thousands of cats and dogs yearly, and spaying and neutering dogs and cats.

A March 2023 article in the Daily News-Record reported that Winchester-Frederick County was working to reduce the number of feral cats in the area. This effort was a collaboration with the Community Cat Alliance (CCA). This organization helps cats in Winchester-Frederick County through a targeted trap-neuter-return (TNR) strategy.

Since the beginning of 2023, the CCA has spayed or neutered 169 cats. The organization captures the cats by enticing them into a trap with food. After the cat is inside the trap, the door closes, and a volunteer places a blanket over the trap to keep the animal calm. CCA transports the animal to Anicira Veterinary Center where the cat is spayed or neutered.

Homeless cats have become a problem in Winchester-Frederick County due to prolific breeding. In this instance, the CCA trapped 25 cats located near Berryville. The organization transported them to Anicira, where they were spayed and neutered.
