Microplastics Zine

Project: Microplastics Zine
Project Overview
I created a zine covering the topic of the unknown effects of microplastics on the human body that was RISOgraph printed on 11" x 17" paper and distributed to local residents in downtown Corpus Christi during a monthly Art Walk.
Research
Since this zine was going to be distributed to local Corpus Christi residents, I wanted to include something to make the reader realize that the threat of microplastics can affect everyone, and the harm being caused by oil companies is happening right in our own backyard. I also knew I wanted to visually show microplastics entering the human body to evoke a sense of disgust in the viewer. Since I could only print two colors on the RISOgraph, I wanted to use the blue color to symbolize technology, and yellow to look like a warning symbol.

First rough draft
Development
In my first draft of this zine, I chose to include a picture of a rat instead of a human because I wanted to reference the scientific study that was performed on the effect of microplastics in rats. However, I ended up revising this to include a realistic picture of a human in order to have a stronger visual connection with the reader.
First Draft
In the second draft, I added a confetti-like motif throughout the pages in order to symbolize how microplastics can be found everywhere and are contaminating our lives and bodies. Eventually, this ended up being removed from the final draft because I personally did not like how it looked.

Final Execution
For the final draft of this project, I added a map of Corpus Christi with all the oil refineries in the nearby area pinpointed on the map in order to show the target demographic how closely this effects all the residents of Corpus Christi.
