Live//work

Castle Gardens, Nottingham

Year 2, Project 3 (10 weeks)

Designed as part of a wider group masterplanning project, 2 live/work units are part of a perimeter block divided into plots 12x12m approx. each student in the group was given their own plot and dwelling typology to work with. We would then work together on ridge heights and building design to fit into our site plan already drawn up.

The dwelling type, ‘live/work’ fitted well with the corner plot and central location on the masterplan. The first unit is a café and bar, which sits beneath a 3 bedroom family flat. The second (and smaller) is an intimate performance venue for up and coming local talent in music, dance and theatre. Above it is a 1 bedroom flat.

Worked into the design is outdoor seated built as part of the landscape and has connection with the canal and newly designed park.

The orientation of the building has allowed the creation of 1st floor terraces to capture south light and solar gain.
