For my senior thesis project, I illustrated and designed a counting book for children. This book is about many different animals at the zoo as they prepare a surprise birthday party for Mr. Llama. As a huge animal lover, I truly enjoyed working on this project for the whole semester because I was able to build special relationships with the animals I created. I even owned half of these animals when I was little!

Throughout the semester, my goal was to create unique and whimsical stories on each spread that engages readers as they flip through the book.  Therefore, my approach was to include adjectives that start with the same letter as the animal and imagine a story that goes well with the party theme. As children flip through the book and count from 1 to 10, the book wraps up with a grand finale where 55 animals come together to surprise the reader and celebrate Mr. Llama’s 11th birthday.

I used watercolor, ink, and fluid acrylic paint to make the textured backgrounds.
This book is hand-bound and limited to 10 copies.
