Safe Harbor Landscapes

PAINTINGS OF MICHIGAN'S INLAND SEAS
"There is something timeless in the moment, in the glint of the sun hidden behind a cloud, in a summer haze, or at the edge of the horizon at the end of the day."
"Safe Harbor at Grand Haven"

A new painting just completed, this is the first of two 30-inch panoramas on canvas I am completing this month. I like to represent actual Michigan locations but with an element of drama that takes them toward the timeless. I am fascinated with nature's vastness in relation to manmade things.
"Promise of Fair Weather at Big Sable Point"

My second Lake Michigan panorama painting at 24" x 36" is a sunset scene from Ludington State Park at the Big Sable Lighthouse.

"After the Squall"

A surrealistic new oil painting of Lake Michigan from Ludington State Park. We had just sheltered in the car as a rain squall passed over and emerged to see this moody sun appearing from behind the scud clouds. I emptied the scene of people leaving just this lonely picnic table to counterbalance the sun and the light on the lake.

"Empire Sunset"

My small acrylic painting "Empire Sunset" has been invited to be included in the "Solar" Show at the Pour-d Gallery in Rockford Michigan. The theme of the SOLAR is "the sun just above the horizon before it dips its head to create a golden hour of time, magical when the color of the sky turns orange and yellow, contours soften and the world is bathed in warmth." The Exhibition will run from 6/17/2023 until 9/1/2023.

"Last Light at Point Betsie"

This tonalist work explores a very different color palette of deep blue and red acrylic. Painted on 16" x 20" wood panel, the view was inspired by a telephoto shot I took at Point Betsie Lighthouse a few years ago. The Lombardy poplars framed the sun as it settled close to the horizon ver Lake Michigan. The high-resolution scan captured the dark subtle tones much better on this painting.
