Permeable Boundaries

Our thesis analyses open source models and crowdsourcing dynamics. These models suggest a possible application in a design project.
We elaborated a standard process for a shared design project, that indicate principal characters and phases and how characters interact each other.
Shared Mental Map on MindMup
Designer abilities are accompanied by general users experience and together create a feedback loop, generating a new project that contains all these different experiences. According to the standard process, designers and
technicians are considered administrators who propose a topic.
Using instruments like Mindmup and Github, users can develop an online brainstorming.
The map is visible on: http://goo.gl/lMAHGG
Surveys
Using the ideas from the mental map, we selected 12 realized case studies: they are all temporary projects that are easy to realize, with rough and low cost materials.
All these examples have a clear main message to transmit to public.
These examples were used for writing 12 forms with some photos, the year of realization, a small description of the project, and five questions per form.
The aim of this survey is to obtain a usable common base for a shared project studio, and users had to fill it out.
Results inserted in this page were excellent: thanks to their descriptions, voters achieved and have are aware, and their votes indicated the most appreciated qualities of the projects.
Bovisa, Milan
Our standard process is very interesting if used for redevelopment of abandoned places: usually voluntary and local communities have a stake in their future destinations.
We applied our shared design standard process to a wide ex-industrial area in Milan, now completely abandoned, “La Goccia” in Bovisa.
For a hundred of years this area was used for the Gasworks of Milan, a very important industrial park for the gas production.
The entire industrial area was definitely closed in 1994, losing its original function. The inaccessible park is
useless for the rest of the neighborhood, for this reason a local committee wants to save it from the building of new structures and use it as a park.
Concept
The concept of our shared project is creating a representation of “invasion” in this impenetrable territory.
The old boundary of the industrial park has been modified after 1994, enlarging the public space near Villapizzone station and recreating a the old boundary.
Represention of Bovisa past
With the existing elements is very interesting create a relation between:
• the past identity representation
• create a dialog between the past and its ruins in present.

For the past representation we used two elements:
• Reconstruction of non visible elements, recreating the sensation to be in an apparently inaccessible area. We inserted a temporary framed wall that permits only the access using the railway underpass.
• Use of a photograph exposition of the Gasworks history, positioned in the underpass.
Points of view
We used three point of views near the underpass to create a dialog between the past and ruins in its present.
Using these points of view, visitors reached a superior high and they are able to observe some industrial ruins over the actual permeable boundary.
For creating a relation between the visible ruins and their past aspect we used our temporary frame wall again.
As an object produces an image on the retina, existing buildings generate their past image on the framed wall,
both visible from the point of view.
Framed wall
Framed wall is realizable using a wooden structure with wind bracing elements, supported by the existing balustrade. This system permits the creation of folded shapes, subsequently covered by fabrics.
Points of view
The shape of embankments used for the points of view is realized using wooden formworks.
Every embankment contains wooden piles to avoid ground landslips. Ground will be casted layer by layer and pressed.
For the embankments will be used clay soil. Clays exhibit plasticity when mixed with water in certain proportions.
When dry, clay becomes firm and when fired in a kiln, permanent physical and chemical changes occur.
Drawings and 3d printed maquette represent the final project result.
