Rather surprisingly, the South Downs is England's most wooded national park. These woodland areas have been cultivated, managed, coppiced and abandoned over many years, leading to an ever changing landscape and a fascinating mixture of creeping disorder amidst the regimented plantation rows. As ever, it's impossible to find a true wilderness in one of the most crowded corners of the country, but it's still possible to be happily lost amongst these trees for many hours throughout the year.
