Save the Arts - Music Therapy Campaign

Hi, I'm Niani Turner – but you can call me BEthereal!

Welcome to my Save the Arts Campaign, inspired by music therapy!
These are my final designs above. Keep scrolling and I'll show you how I got here.

This was the Black and White Comps phase!
I really struggled in this phase! I didn't really understand the assignment whenever I started this project, so I was really resistant to this project in the beginning. I feel like a part of the reason I had such a creative block during this phase was that resistance. I didn't feel like I really gave myself much to seriously work with, especially because this was a campaign about Saving the Arts. I feel like a lot of my sketches weren't really geared towards the arts and the ones that were either wouldn't be effective enough or cohesive enough.

This was the Comp Refinement phase! Here, I created two different sets of comps.

My first set was a campaign for the literary arts.
My second campaign was for the performance arts, specifically music.
I also struggled on this phase, the resistance and not knowing how to approach doing this design definitely carried over from the comps phase. The first set was a very strong example if the battle I was having with myself and still having to produce something.

Off the bat, you wouldn't know that the first set was based on the literary arts. I think the reason for that is because I didn't really have a strong direction or reason why I wanted to campaign for it either. That showed in my work, because the 3 designs really wasn't cohesive nor did it effectively convey what I was campaigning. You can also see that I didn't even really put that much effort into making them something I'd be proud of.

When it comes to the second set, I was a lot more happy with this direction and I what I had produced so far. I felt like I had a strong direction, an effective design, and a cohesive set of comps. It was actually easy to campaign for because I have a solid connection to what I was advocating for. I already decided that this would the direction I ultimately went in, so I spent a lot more time on this set of comps until I laid a foundation that gave me something I could seriously work with.

Again, here are all the final designs I produced!
Before I started this phase, I got some really great feedback from my professor. I tried to apply what she told me as best as I could and it furthered my designs greatly. She suggested I make the elements in the other executions interact with each other vs. being 2 separate elements (music + benefit of listening to music), include a visual element of music, and develop a CTA (a call to action; what am I trying to persuade people to do?).

My goal with this project was to advocate for the importance of music therapy and encourage people to sign up for it. I think I did a great job on this project and I enjoy how I let my mind run wild creatively with my concepts. I knew I wanted to the headphone wire to be consistent throughout the entire campaign. I really love that I chose to get the background be the color for my designs and let my main content and be white and and shades of gray. The reason I chose to go with such a colorful gradient was to display all the different frequencies and levels music can heal you on. I thought of all the different associations that the different colors have and then I connected that with all the different types of music there is. In both ways, every single one means something to someone therefore they heal collectively. That being said, I felt the need to include all of them to keep the spectrum broad. For that same reason I chose to have music notes instead of something like specific instrument.

If I could go back and continue working on this project or I had more time, I would make the headphone wire's thickness consistent throughout my people. For how detailed they are – the smaller bits are harder to see and start to blend together more, especially at a smaller scale. Another thing I'd change is adding a CTA, I've never done one before in a design but after we presented this and saw examples of how to properly do one I created one.

My CTA would be:

Feel. Heal. Connect. Music is therapy.
Tap into the inner you over the jams that move you and move you. #MusicMakesYouMoveTwice
