Época de Sardinas (Sardines Season in Portugal)

1 de maio is the national workers day in Portugal as well as many other parts of the world, but here it also marks the beginning of the sardines season: a cause for celebration. You can feel it, you can definitely smell it, the fish are coming in in masses.

The fish is washed with plain water, salted in a cube and grilled that is it. Salt, water, fire and a lot of smoke. The cloud is dense, this smell will go home with you, your face is salty. People are happy. A lofe of bread and red wine and beer is the main course of the menu. It seems as there are a thousand people and everybody is just having the same dish.

Grandmas teach their youngins how te eat it down to the bone without get stiched with he spines. It is a lifetime practice that will go down the next generations. There are not even chairs or stools, as if anybody couldn't wait to get their greasy hands on the glorious salty fish. The rectangular long picnic tables have no space for one more person. The beverages, plates and bread are on the table. They are ready, and here come the sardines. Victory.
