20 Pound Paper Mario: A Classroom Exercise in Polygons

When I lived in Potsdam, NY I was tenured at SUNY Potsdam in a graduate Instructional Technology department, and I also taught adjunct courses and served on committees for Clarkson University's Digital Arts & Sciences program. As these students had more of an engineering and math background than my traditional class I developed one of my all time favorite classroom assignments, which I jokingly call "20 Pound Paper Mario."

This was in the early 2000's, 3D printing had not yet become a common technology, and the photos below were taken with computer lab webcams, as this was also the time period before cell phone cameras.

The students were tasked with making papercraft versions of characters from a video game, with the additional challenge that all of the models had to be the same scale. A very fun and silly class morning I will never forget.
