A book that tells an ancient story

Gloria Cortina is a renowned Mexican designer, her design inspirations range from Mayan art to 20th-century Modernism, México’s unique Arts and Crafts, and natural and archaeological environments. The furniture and objects that she creates produce very specific aesthetics and they are extremely place-sensitive. The book, commissioned by Cristina Grajales Gallery for Cortina’s show in NYC, is intended to reflect the balanced coexistence of heritage and modernism that inhabits the designer’s creative process. The layout, typography, and materials make this book a design object in itself.

Through the use of different materials and papers from rustic to processed, and printing finishings the book aims to communicate the vision and work methodology of the designer Gloria Cortina and how she transforms materials taken from nature to create avant-garde expressive objects. The subtle yet eloquent layout of the book is a journey from the early stages of her creations to their materialization, by showing hand-drawn sketches and also pictures from the hand-crafting workshops the pages lead the reader to the finished design objects. The book also responds to the parameters of the curatorial script of Cortina's solo show at the gallery in NYC.

“I take into account the human touch, design is like an extension of myself. While Barragán searched for the divine in the supernatural, I look for these moments in the everyday. I go the extra mile in how things smell, how they age, and how they feel to the touch.”

GLORIA CORTINA

“I like to understand the essence of things , it’s about understanding the world, but there’s this connection with the wellbeing of a piece. It’s something that brings you peace and joy.”
