'Items are considered missing when they cannot be located in the library collection by staff or end users. It is important to change an item's process status to missing so that users are aware that a resource is unavailable.'
-Do I compile my own archive of missing things?
what would that look like?

-Do I  bring together famous missing things from history and make them into an archive of missing things?
-Get a list of missing items from Manchester Library? / local relevant archive?

Missing things:

Amber Room-
constructed in the 18th century in Prussia, the room was dismantled and eventually disappeared during World War II.
Menkaure-
The sarcophagus was removed from the pyramid and was sent by ship to the British Museum in London, but the merchant ship Beatrice carrying it was lost after leaving port at Malta on October 13, 1838. The other materials were sent by a separate ship, and those materials now reside at the museum, with the remains of the wooden coffin case on display.
ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM STOLEN ART-
On March 18, 1990, two thieves dressed as police officers broke into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum(opens in new tab) in Boston, Massachusetts, and stole 13 works of art valued at about $500 million. They included three works by the Dutch painter Rembrandt and five works by the French artist Edgar Degas. The thieves' identity is still unknown, and the artwork has never been recovered. It's possible that the thieves who stole the works of art are now dead and the paintings are severely damaged or destroyed. Despite the high value of the art, it would be difficult to sell as it is well known, and any buyer could easily determine that it was stolen and end up facing criminal charges themselves.

GEORGE MALLORY'S LOST CAMERA-
British explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared on June 8, 1924, while nearing the top of Mount Everest. A storm may have doomed their final push to climb the mountain. No one subsequently succeeded in reaching the summit until 1953, when a team led by Edmund Hillary became the first to climb Mount Everest. One question that remains unanswered is whether Mallory and Irvine managed to reach the top before they died.
Mallory's body was discovered in 1999; evidence suggests he was killed by a fall. Irvine's body has never been found. If Irvine's body is discovered, it's possible that the camera Mallory and Irvine took with them will also be found. If the film in the camera is still preserved then it's possible it could be developed, and the question of whether Mallory and Irvine made it to the top of Everest before dying can finally be solved.
WORLD'S FIRST FEATURE-LENGTH FILM ("Story of the Kelly Gang")
The "Story of the Kelly Gang," released in Australia in 1906, is regarded by many as the world's first feature-length film. Running at over an hour long.
Unfortunately, the film was never properly preserved, and by the 1970s, only "some publicity material and a few photographs" remained, Jackson and Shirley noted. Discoveries of bits of the film, along with restoration work, have allowed for about a quarter of the film to be revealed, but much of it remains lost.

Damaged and lost in time

Lake Toplitz’s Nazi Treasure-
Legend has it that the Nazis dumped billions of dollars worth of stolen gold—in the area of $5.6 billion—into the waters of Lake Toplitz, an isolated lake located in the heart of a lush forest in the Alps.
Over the years at least five divers have died trying to find the legendary treasure. Other expeditions have not found any conclusive evidence

Beale cyphers -
The Beale ciphers are coded that supposedly reveal the location of buried treasure in Virginia. The ciphers were first published in 1885 in a pamphlet written by an anonymous . According to the pamphlet, the person who wrote the code was an named Thomas Beale, who had hidden a large amount of , silver, and jewels.
Manchester lost and found facebook groups....
I could base my book on local lost and found Facebook groups ?

Immortalising a time and a place of lost things in print.
A curated story of local lost happenings.
Included with pictures would be the captions to the images alongside possible comments?
The appreciation of an item's value to one person that is noticed by a stranger who then posts it online.

GATHER LOST THINGS.

there are two different types of posts on these groups, POSTS THAT ARE ADVERTISING SOMETHING THEY HAVE FOUND, AND POSTS ADVERTISING SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN LOST.

-Some things are found and are trying to get back to their owners.

-Some things have been lost and not yet found (might not even be a photo of it just a description).

TITLE: LOST STOLEN AND SOMETIMES FOUND
-ARCHIVE OF LOST THINGS
-
When it comes to the design of my book,
it should have an everyman aesthetic, not changing too much from the posts.

-i wont change dialogue or spelling mistakes committed on peoples posts.
-i want it to be light hearted slightly comedic
_it needs to highlight all the missing things in Manchester and be enjoyable to look through
-I want it to be cheaply made feel almost throw away but not quite.

ONGOING IDEAS...
-list of names of dogs at the end.... OBITUARY

-add one piece of popping colour coded to each booklet

-Really play off this idea of the expensive and the cheap small ad's that they are add end papers, look up end paper designs .

-indexed colour coded booklets.

why am I doing it !?
each different booklet is printed on different coloured paper,
ON THE BOX THAT CONTAINS THE BOOKLETS HAVE SOME STATS ON THE BACK LIKE:

-MOST LIKLEY DAY TO LOOSE SOMETHING IN MANCHESTER.

-AT WHAT TIME

-MOST LIKLEY THING TO LOOSE IN MANCHESTER
I was really hoping to find my wallet whilst conducting the research for this project.
it didn't happen  :(
1st hand research searching for archives... before i landed on my c hosen subject of lost things.
MORE FORMAT IDEAS...
enclose the booklets in a folder styled paper sleeve that is stapled to the rest of the booklet
book moc ups so far
-think where else this can live- website for people to visit and log lost things for next ? updated issue ?
-instagram ?
-on back of folder have a brief description of the project.

THOUGHT:
